Manchester City 3-0 Liverpool: Six Straight Wins and a Statement Win at Anfield

For an hour at Anfield the scoreboard read 0-0 and Liverpool looked like the team that had done the harder part of the work. Manchester City, playing their first match since an independent commission found the club guilty of 114 breaches of Premier League financial rules, were booed from the first whistle to the last and spent most of the afternoon being drawn into a scrap. Then Ryan Gravenberch collected a second yellow card in the 62nd minute and the shape of the match changed completely.
Within thirteen minutes City had scored three times: Haaland from the rebound at 65, Doku with a curling shot into the far corner at 68, Cherki at 78. It is the first time in six matches that City have trailed in the game, and the first time two goals in the same match came from a wide player cutting inside.
How the game turned
46-48'
The first yellow card arrives two minutes into the second half, for a lunge on Elliot Anderson in midfield.
62'
Gravenberch, already booked, challenges Jeremy Doku as the Belgian drives forward and is shown his second yellow. Liverpool are down to ten.
65'
Haaland opens the scoring. Doku drives into the box from the left, his own shot is blocked, and the Norwegian follows it up left-footed past Alisson. He had missed a one-on-one moments earlier.
68'
Doku gets his own goal three minutes later, cutting inside and bending a shot into the far top corner beyond the keeper.
78'
Cherki finishes the rout. The ball is worked into Gvardiol, he turns it into the area, and Cherki slides it home from close range.
90'
City walk off with the ball and 18 points from six. Liverpool drop to ninth on nine points, with a goal difference of zero.
Two of the three goals came from Jeremy Doku, who came off the bench at 56 minutes and was directly involved in all three: the blocked shot that Haaland turned in, the foul that brought the red card, and a curling finish of his own three minutes later. Ryanan Cherki was the other stand-out, scoring the third and being named man of the match alongside Elliot Anderson.
What it means for the table
Six matches, six wins, 18 points. City are three clear of Arsenal and have scored more than twice as many goals as anyone else in the division. For context, this is the club's first perfect start in the league since 2003-04, and Enzo Maresca is only the fourth manager to take a new Premier League side to six straight wins from the opening fixture.

Frequently asked questions
What was the final score at Anfield on 11 October 2026?
Manchester City won 3-0. Erling Haaland opened the scoring in the 65th minute, Jeremy Doku added a second in the 68th, and Rayan Cherki made it three in the 78th. Liverpool played the final half of the match with ten men.
Who was sent off for Liverpool, and when?
Ryan Gravenberch was dismissed in the 62nd minute for a second yellow card. The first booking came two minutes into the second half; the second followed a challenge on Jeremy Doku.
How did a 0-0 first half turn into a three-goal gap?
Liverpool had more of the ball early on and looked sharper, but City kept the better chances. Once Gravenberch went off, City's wide players found space that a compact eleven-man defensive block had denied them for the first hour. All three goals came in the 13 minutes after the dismissal.
Is this the best start in the Premier League since 2003-04?
It is City's first perfect start of six wins from six in the league since the 2003-04 campaign. Only a handful of managers have taken a new Premier League side to six straight wins from the start, and Enzo Maresca is the most recent of them.
How big is the gap at the top now?
City sit on 18 points after six matches, three clear of Arsenal on 15. Brighton are third on 13 with the best goal difference in the division at plus 13.
Where does this leave Liverpool?
Ninth on nine points from six, with a zero goal difference. It was Liverpool's first league defeat of the season. They remain the second-best side in the division on away points, with seven of their nine coming on the road.
What is Manchester City's goal tally so far?
Sixteen goals scored and five conceded in six matches - a plus 11 difference, the joint-best attack in the division alongside Brighton.
Which shirts are available in men's, women's and youth sizes?
Both clubs' 2026/27 home and away shirts are in stock in all three size ranges. Every product card below links straight to the men's, women's and youth version of that shirt.
