Ronaldo's 980th Goal: Al Nassr 3-0 Al Diriyah and the Road to 1,000

Al Nassr 3-0 Al Diriyah is the kind of result that gets remembered for the table rather than the scoreline. The champions moved level on 19 points with Al Qadsiah, kept a clean sheet, and put the round’s heaviest home display in front of their own supporters. It also produced the one number everybody came for.

Cristiano Ronaldo, 41 years old and four months past his Portugal captaincy crisis, scored in the 23rd minute to reach 980 competitive goals for club and country. Twenty short of 1,000 — a figure no player has reached in the modern era.

He left the Portugal national team camp in Copenhagen days earlier, having walked out over his role in the squad. Whatever was happening off the pitch, the answer on it lasted under half an hour.

The goal was not built from a dribble. It was built from anticipation, which is how Ronaldo has kept scoring at this stage of his career.

Kingsley Coman drove at the left side of the penalty area and forced Al Diriyah goalkeeper Waleed Abdullah into a save. The parry did not hold. Ronaldo was already moving toward the loose ball before Coman had finished his follow-through, and he put it into the net from close range.

Sixteen years ago, at this stage of a career, that position would have been attacked differently. Today it is a question of being first to the second ball. The stats underline how little of the old game was needed: eight of Al Nassr’s 13 shots landed on target, and Diriyah managed a single effort on goal from eight attempts.

Figures as reported after the match; Al Nassr listed first.

The milestone is real, and so is the gap. After eight matches of the 2026/27 Saudi Pro League, Ronaldo has four league goals in seven appearances. Ivan Toney has eleven in eight.

So Ronaldo sits in a cluster rather than alone at the top: Trincão, Retegui and Lacazette are on five, while Ilenikhena, Bergwijn, En-Nesyri, Milinković-Savić and Quiñones are level with him on four. A 980th career goal is a career milestone. A league scoring title at 41 would be something else entirely.

Al Nassr went from 16 points to 19 with the win. That is level with Al Qadsiah, who had earlier beaten Al Kholood 5-0, but Al Nassr sit second on goal difference. Al Hilal are a further point behind with a game in hand, and Saturday’s Al Hilal versus Al Ittihad fixture could yet shift all three of them.

The next Al Nassr game is away at Al Ahli on 15 October.

Two further notes on the wider picture, both reported at the time: Ronaldo remains Al Nassr’s captain and the subject of a supportive pre-match display at Al-Awwal Park, and the Portuguese Federation’s provisional suspension process over his camp departure is unresolved.

Every Al Nassr home design Ronaldo has worn since 2024/25 is still available new, and the Portugal shirts he wears on international duty are in stock across the same three cuts. Pick a cut below — each button goes straight to that product.
